Economic consequences of weather events and CSTAR

The societal impacts statistics web site created by NOAA’s Office of Program Map of NWS WFOs participating in the current NCSU CSTAR projectPlanning and Integration (PPI) has been updated. While the web site is intended to document the value of NOAA/NWS activities, it also contains updated research and statistics on the economic consequences of weather events and the importance of the economic sectors most affected by weather events and changing weather conditions.

Currently, 11 NWS local Forecast Offices and 3 national centers are participating in collaborative research activities with NC State University.  These research activities are aimed to improve forecast and warning services for some of the most difficult forecast challenges across the Southeast and Mid Atlantic. Many of these forecast challenges including severe weather, flooding, and impacts from hurricanes are highlighted as having the greatest economic consequences in the recently updated statistics.
